MW4 DMZ MIA Operators: Rescue Cost and Insurance

When an Operator dies or misses the exfil, they go MIA and cannot deploy until you pay DMZ Cash to rescue them or dismiss them. The higher their Dog Tag, the more a rescue costs. An Operator Rescue Beacon makes it free, and a Weapon Insurance Contract sends your weapons back to the Stash.

Last updated Game version: Launch (October 23, 2026)

What happens when your Operator goes MIA

  • An Operator who is eliminated, or does not make it out, goes MIA (Missing in Action) and cannot deploy again until you deal with them.
  • Rescue: pay DMZ Cash from your Bank at the Operators station. The Operator comes back with every Trait they had.
  • The price is set by the Operator's Trait Points: the more Traits, the more a rescue costs.
  • A rescued Operator comes back without their gear, so equip a new loadout before you deploy them again.
  • Dismiss: instead of paying, let the MIA Operator go and recruit a new one into the slot. The new Operator starts again from the first Dog Tag level.
  • A rival can take the Dog Tag of an Operator they kill. Rescue the Operator and the Dog Tag comes back with them.

The run itself still counts: you keep the DMZ XP you earned, and Activision says there is no XP penalty for dying. The gear you carried is lost, except what sits in a Secure Slot. New to all this? Our MW4 DMZ beginner's guide walks through a deployment from infil to exfil.

What an MIA rescue costs

Activision does not use a fixed price: the cost follows the Operator's Trait Points. An Operator earns one Trait Point at each new Dog Tag level, so every level makes the next rescue dearer. An Operator at Onyx III, the last of the 18 levels, has all 18 Trait Points and is the most expensive to bring back.

Where each Dog Tag sits among the 18 levels. Each level adds a Trait Point, so the further down the table, the higher the rescue price.

Every level and what it gives is on our MW4 DMZ Dog Tags page. The prices below are not confirmed yet, so take them as a rough guide.

Not confirmed yet

  • One guide's own rescues: 13,000 DMZ Cash for an Operator at Silver I, and 65,000 for the same Operator at Damascus III.
  • Players on Steam: one says their best Operator costs about 60,000 to buy back; another says an Operator with all 18 Traits costs 60,000 to 80,000.
  • One guide lists an MIA Recovery Discount in the 3D Printer's Upgrades tab: 5% off every rescue, for 5 Regional Combat Notes, 10 Control Units and 10 Rigid Synthetics, with a second tier later.

Rescue or dismiss?

Dismissing is free, but the slot's new Operator starts again from the first Dog Tag level, Steel I. A rescue keeps every Trait and the Dog Tag level. So the question is how much you would throw away:

  • A low-level Operator is cheap to rescue and quick to replace. Either way you lose little, which makes them the one to take on risky runs.
  • An Operator near Onyx III costs the most to rescue, and dismissing them throws away up to 18 Trait Points. Operator Prestige also needs all 18 Trait Points on an Operator who is not MIA; see our Operator Prestige guide.
  • Keep enough DMZ Cash in the Bank for a rescue before you take your best Operator into a high-threat area.

Operator Rescue Beacons and Weapon Insurance Contracts

Two items soften an MIA. Both sit on the Ready Up screen before you deploy, each as an on/off switch with a number beside it. Switch one on before you deploy.

Operator Rescue Beacon

The switch is beside Edit Operator. The game describes it as:

Rescues Operator for no cost in case of failure to exfil.

If the run ends without an exfil, the Operator is rescued without spending any DMZ Cash. A beacon saves the most on a high-level Operator, where a rescue costs the most.

Weapon Insurance Contract

The switch is beside Edit Loadout. The game describes it as:

Insures all equipped weapons. They will be returned to the Stash if held upon death.

Weapons you are holding when you die go back to your Stash instead of being lost. The description names weapons only; the rest of your gear is lost as usual unless it is in a Secure Slot.

Where to get them

  • The Vault Edition's Deployment Kit includes 2 Operator Rescue Beacons and 2 Weapon Insurance Contracts (Activision). See what else it adds on our Is MW4 DMZ free? page.
  • Survival Kits are handed out for DMZ levels, DMZ Orders, Missions and events, and you open them at the Survival Kits station in the FOB.

Not confirmed yet

  • One guide lists Operator Rescue Beacons and Weapon Insurance Contracts in the Advanced SERE Kit, a Legendary Survival Kit given at DMZ level 70.

Lost weapons and blueprints

A Weapon Blueprint you own can be used once for free in the DMZ Gunsmith. If you lose it on a deployment, you can buy it again at a discount compared with building the same weapon. A weapon you unlocked with its Weapon Manual stays in the Gunsmith, so you can buy it again whenever you like. A looted weapon without its manual is gone until you find the manual; our Weapon Manuals guide explains the difference.

Questions

How much does it cost to rescue an MIA Operator in MW4 DMZ?

It depends on the Operator's Trait Points: Activision says the more Traits they have, the more the rescue costs, and has not published a price list. Not confirmed yet: about 13,000 DMZ Cash at Silver I and 60,000 to 80,000 for an Operator with all 18 Trait Points.

Can you rescue an MIA Operator for free?

Yes, with an Operator Rescue Beacon. Switch it on beside Edit Operator on the Ready Up screen before you deploy; the game says it "Rescues Operator for no cost in case of failure to exfil".

Are there insured weapons in MW4 DMZ?

Yes: the Weapon Insurance Contract. Switch it on beside Edit Loadout on the Ready Up screen. The game says it "Insures all equipped weapons. They will be returned to the Stash if held upon death".

Do you lose XP when your Operator goes MIA?

No. You keep the DMZ XP you earned in the run; Activision says there is no XP penalty for dying. You lose the gear you carried, except items in a Secure Slot, and the Operator goes MIA until you rescue or dismiss them.

Should you rescue or dismiss an MIA Operator?

Dismissing costs nothing, but the new Operator starts again from the first Dog Tag level, Steel I. A rescue keeps every Trait. The higher the Dog Tag, the more a rescue costs and the more you would throw away by dismissing.

What happens to the Dog Tag of an MIA Operator?

A rival who kills your Operator can take their Dog Tag and exfil with it. When you rescue the Operator, the Dog Tag comes back with them.
