Is MW4 DMZ Free? What You Need to Play It

No, not at launch. DMZ comes with Modern Warfare 4, and Activision says you have to buy the game to play it; MW4 only joins Game Pass in Holiday 2027. Activision has not announced a free-to-play DMZ.

Why DMZ is not free

DMZ is not a separate game. Activision lists it as one of three modes in Modern Warfare 4, next to the Campaign and Multiplayer, and its October 15 post says MW4 launches on October 23, 2026 as a standalone release that you have to buy to play. So the price of DMZ is the price of the game.

What you need to buy to play DMZ

Any edition of Modern Warfare 4. All three include the full game with DMZ; only the digital ones, pre-ordered, let you in early.

The Vault Edition is not needed for DMZ. What it adds there is a Deployment Kit (2 Weapon Insurance Contracts, 2 Operator Rescue Beacons, 2 Fulton Drop Markers, 2 Medium Backpacks and 2 2-Plate Carriers) on top of its Operator packs, blueprints and a season of BlackCell. Is MW4 DMZ on Game Pass?

Not at launch. Activision says Modern Warfare 4 comes out as a standalone game and joins Game Pass in Holiday 2027. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep the older games, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, but not MW4 or its DMZ.

Not sure about the Vault Edition? Buy the Digital Standard Edition and upgrade later on the same platform for $30 US. A disc pre-order cannot be upgraded.

Can you play DMZ early?

Yes, if you pre-order or pre-purchase a digital edition: DMZ Early Access opens on October 20, 2026 at 10 AM PT, three days before launch, on every platform. Will DMZ ever be free?

Activision has not said. There is no announced free-to-play version, free trial or free weekend for MW4 DMZ. If that changes, we update this page the day Activision posts it, and the MW4 updates page will list it too.
