MW4 DMZ PvP

Is MW4 DMZ PvE or PvP?

Both. AI forces guard Hajin, and other squads and solo players drop into the same match. Here is how each side works, how Bounties and the Wanted status work, and whether you can skip the player fights.

Last updated Game version: Pre-launch (official intel, October 2026)

The short answer: PvE and PvP

MW4 DMZ is PvPvE. The AI side is always there: North Korean forces guard the places in Hajin and hit back harder as an area's threat rises. The player side is your choice: other squads and solo players share the map, and you decide whether to fight them, avoid them or talk to them. Activision has not announced a PvE-only mode (checked October 11, 2026).

The two sides of a deployment

PvE: the AI

  • North Korean forces guard the points of interest across Hajin: foot soldiers, armored troops, K9 units, helicopter patrols and road convoys.
  • Lieutenants and roaming Commanders are the bosses.
  • Each area shows its Threat Level under your compass, from Low to Extreme, and fighting pushes it up.
  • Kill enough AI soldiers in one deployment and a Hunt Squad is sent after you: you are Marked for Death.

PvP: other players

  • Other squads and solo players deploy into the same Hajin, and each of them decides whether to fight.
  • Rival players are not counted in the Threat Level, so a quiet area can still hold an ambush.
  • Killing players builds a Bounty, and enough kills make you Wanted.
  • A rival Operator is worth more DMZ XP than an AI soldier.

Bounties and the Wanted status

DMZ keeps track of player kills with a Bounty system. Kill players and you become a target worth DMZ Cash; 4 kills make you Wanted. Other players can hunt you for the reward, and the 50 most wanted players and the 50 best hunters show on a leaderboard in the FOB.

Getting a Bounty

  • Your first player kill gives you a Bounty straight away. It sits on your Dog Tag, which you can check in your Loadout along with the number of players you have killed.
  • The Bounty is an amount of DMZ Cash that grows with every rival Operator you take down, and it follows you from one deployment to the next.
  • How the fights go counts too: who fired first and whether you were outnumbered are among the factors that raise your Bounty level.

Wanted and Most Wanted

  • After 4 player kills, counted across deployments, you become Wanted.
  • When a Wanted Operator gets close, players nearby are warned automatically.
  • Wanted has several levels that rise with your kills. The biggest Bounties are Most Wanted and appear on the Bounty Leaderboard in the FOB.
  • At the top Wanted level, Activision says your rough position is likely visible to every player in Hajin, not only to those who paid for intel.

Losing your Bounty

  • You die and do not exfil: your Bounty and your Wanted level are gone.
  • Another player takes your Dog Tag and exfils with it, even if your squad revives you after the kill.
  • You pay it off yourself with DMZ Cash at a Bounty Station in Hajin.
  • Claiming other players' Bounties can also take some heat off your own back.

Hunting a Bounty

  • Bounty Stations in Hajin list the Wanted Operators in your deployment for free.
  • To find one, buy intel with DMZ Cash from your FOB Bank. The more Wanted the target, the more the intel costs.
  • Intel puts a circle on your Tac-Map around the target's area. The more Wanted they are, the smaller the circle gets and the faster it updates.
  • To collect, kill the target and exfil with their Dog Tag. The payout follows their Bounty level, with extra at the top Wanted level, and your cut goes into your Bank after exfil.

The Bounty Leaderboard

  • A station in your FOB, open from the start.
  • It lists the Top 50 Most Wanted players, each marked Wanted or Eliminated with the Bounty on their head, and the Top 50 Bounty Hunters with the Bounties they claimed and the DMZ Cash they earned.
  • The Most Wanted list updates weekly, and you can switch between all players and your friends.

Where you run into other players

  • Exfil sites: other squads may wait there, and an exfil flare is loud and can be seen from far away.
  • A Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case: after the kill it shows on every player's Tac-Map, and picking it up shows your position too.
  • Commanders: a fight with one can pull in rival Operators hunting the same target.
  • The Hunt Operators Dynamic Operation: accept it and you face a full squad of rival Operators.
  • Wanted players: everyone nearby gets a warning when one comes close.

Bounty Stations, exfil sites and Lieutenant Hunt towers are among the kinds of places listed on our Hajin locations page, and the interactive Hajin map shows the 13 major places with their threat levels.

Can you play DMZ without PvP?

Not as a separate mode: Activision has not announced a PvE-only mode or playlist, and every deployment it has described includes other players. What you can do is keep player fights rare:

  • Activision says you can be as active or as passive with other players as you like, though other squads can still choose to attack you.
  • Proximity chat lets you hear rival Operators nearby, or mute them. Voices get louder as players get closer and carry direction and room echo, so you can try to talk your way out of a fight.
  • The Ping Wheel can request a Truce with another squad, or join up with it.
  • Leaving a Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case on the ground means your own position is not broadcast (the case itself still shows on every map), and the kill still pays DMZ XP and DMZ Cash.

The AI side has its own guide: DMZ threat levels and enemy types. New to the mode? The DMZ beginner's guide walks through a first deployment from the FOB to exfil.

Questions players ask

Is MW4 DMZ PvE or PvP?

Both. AI-controlled North Korean forces guard Hajin, and other squads and solo players deploy into the same match. Whether you fight other players is up to you, but they can still choose to fight you.

Will MW4 DMZ have a PvE-only mode?

Activision has not announced one (checked October 11, 2026). Every deployment it has described shares Hajin with other players. We will update this page if that changes.

How many player kills make you Wanted in DMZ?

4, counted across deployments. Players nearby are warned when a Wanted Operator comes close.

How do you get rid of a Bounty in DMZ?

Die without exfilling, let another player exfil with your Dog Tag, or pay the Bounty off with DMZ Cash at a Bounty Station in Hajin.

Do player kills give more XP in DMZ?

Yes. Activision says eliminating rival Operators awards more DMZ XP than killing AI combatants.
