DMZ Threat Levels, Enemies and Bosses
Every place in Hajin has a Threat Level that tells you how hard the enemy will hit back. Here is how it rises and falls, which areas start where, every enemy type Activision has named, and how to hunt the bosses: Lieutenants and Commanders.
Last updated Game version: Pre-launch (official intel, October 2026)
How Threat Levels work
- Each point of interest has its own Threat Level, shown under the compass when you enter it.
- Fighting raises the Threat Level and brings stronger reinforcements: attack helicopters, more heavily armored troops and, in the end, Deathstalker helicopters sent to chase you.
- Breaking contact, hiding, moving to quieter rural areas and staying out of sight lowers it again.
- Rival players are not counted in the Threat Level, so a Low area can still hide an ambush.
- A Hostiles Kill Count meter tracks your AI kills. When it fills, a Hunt Squad is sent after you and you are Marked for Death.
- Stealth kills with melee, throwing knives or suppressed weapons help you move through higher-threat areas.
The five threat levels, and where each one starts
These are the starting levels Activision lists for each named area, before any fighting. Use the Hajin locations list to filter by level, or see them on the interactive map.
Low Low
The least dangerous level in an area with enemies.
11 named areas: Deadtown Exterior (Deadtown), Farmland Exterior (Imjin Farmland), Jeong Loading Dock (Imjin Farmland), Cheongun Village, Russian Border Crossing (Cheongun Village), Cheongun Outskirts (Cheongun Village), Russian Border (Cheongun Village), Mirae General Hospital, Songdo Wharf, Oamsik Turtle Island (Songdo Wharf), Shoreline Station (Songdo Wharf)

Every enemy type named so far
The enemy forces in Hajin belong to a secretive North Korean faction. Depending on how much of a threat you are, they may ignore you, search for you or attack. Activision's field guide lists these types, and keeps at least one more classified until launch:
Soldiers
- Tier 1 North Korean Grunts
- Tier 2 Armored North Korean Soldiers
- Tier 3 Armored, Gas Masked North Korean Soldiers
- Tier 4 Faceless Armored North Korean Soldiers
Machines
- Autonomous Combat Drone Swarm
- Autonomous LMG Combat Drone
- Autonomous Quadrupeds: K9 (usually underground)
Vehicles
- Attack Infantry Helicopter Patrols
- Road Convoys
Bosses
- Lieutenants
- Commander: Colossus
- Commander: Deathstalker
- Commander: Main NK Battle Tank
Players
- Enemy players (rival Operators)
Activision's June DMZ deep dive also names Juggernauts and Elite Strike Teams among the roaming threats, next to tanks, drone swarms and Deathstalker helicopters. The October field guide above does not list them under those names, so we keep them apart until the game shows what they are.
The vehicles you can take yourself, from the Camper to the Heavy Chopper, are in our MW4 DMZ vehicles guide, with the Paid Infil prices and where to refuel.
Rival players are a different kind of threat: they do not count toward the Threat Level, and killing them builds a Bounty. Our guide Is MW4 DMZ PvE or PvP? explains Bounties, the Wanted status and how to keep player fights rare.
Bosses: Lieutenants and Commanders
Both kinds of boss are tracked on the Boss Board in your FOB, which unlocks once you finish your second DMZ Order. It sells intel on Lieutenants for DMZ Cash and gives free information on Commanders.
Lieutenants
Lieutenants are named high-value targets with more health, a loadout of their own and their own way of fighting; some travel with a few loyal troops. They can be active in Hajin whether you are hunting them or not. Two ways to find one:
- Buy intel at the Boss Board. You unlock it first by finishing set challenges in earlier deployments (in Activision's screenshot, Bale's intel needs the Underground, Counterfeit and Human Intel chapters), and it lasts for one deployment.
- Climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower marked on your Tac-Map and use the station at the top: it marks the closest Lieutenant.
A kill pays DMZ XP and DMZ Cash and may drop a key to the Lieutenant's own loot room (our DMZ key finder shows which door a confirmed key opens). Every Lieutenant also drops a Dog Tag Case. Picking it up shows your position to every player, so plan a fast exfil; getting out with it moves your Boss Board forward, even if you took the case from another player. Activision's two posts differ on the weapon: the Hajin deep dive says you claim it with the kill, while the FOB guide calls the iconic weapon a rare drop.
Lieutenants named so far: Jin-tae, The Doctor, Bale and Iskra, each worth 10,000 DMZ Cash on the Boss Board in Activision's pre-launch screenshot. More cards sit past the edge of that screenshot, so the list is not complete. The board's own challenges:
- Kill Challenge: Kill All Hajin Lieutenants Once.
- Dog Tag Challenge: Extract Dog Tags From All Hajin Lieutenants 2 Times.
- Dog Tag Challenge 2: Extract Dog Tags From All Hajin Lieutenants 5 Times.

Commanders
Commanders are roaming bosses that are always somewhere in Hajin: the Colossus, the Deathstalker helicopter and the main North Korean battle tank. You cannot buy intel on them, but they appear on your Tac-Map once you get near one, and your Team Leader warns you. Many standard weapons do little against them. The first time you take down a given Commander you get a DMZ Cash reward; killing one also pays DMZ XP, and getting out afterwards brings prized 3D Printer ingredients. A captured SAM Site shoots at enemy aircraft, which Activision points out is useful against Deathstalkers.

Staying under the radar
In the June 2026 deep dive, Activision describes a Stealth Meter that helps solo players in particular: when an AI enemy is close to spotting you, you hear an audio cue and a HUD indicator turns from white to yellow to orange. Going prone or back into cover stops the alert.
New to the mode? The DMZ beginner's guide covers the FOB, exfil and what happens when you go Missing in Action.
