Can You Play MW4 DMZ Solo? How Solo Works

Yes. Leave Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen and you deploy alone. Call of Duty's community team says DMZ tries to match solo players with other solos, but there is no guarantee, so you can still meet a full squad.

Last updated Game version: Launch (October 23, 2026)

How to play DMZ solo

  1. Leave Squad Fill off. The switch is at the bottom of the Ready Up screen before you deploy. Switched on, Activision says it drops you in with two other allied players.
  2. Use your safety items if you have them. On the same screen, the switch beside Edit Operator turns on an Operator Rescue Beacon (“Rescues Operator for no cost in case of failure to exfil.”), and the one beside Edit Loadout turns on a Weapon Insurance Contract (“Insures all equipped weapons. They will be returned to the Stash if held upon death.”).
  3. Deploy. The helicopter takes you into Hajin on your own. Other squads and solo players deploy into the same Hajin, and each of them decides whether to fight.

New to DMZ? The DMZ beginner's guide walks through a whole deployment, from infil to exfil, and the interactive Hajin map shows the threat level of every area before you pick where to land.

Do solo players only meet other solos?

Usually, but not always. With Squad Fill off, Call of Duty's community team says DMZ matches are built to put solo players with other solos, duos with duos and trios with trios, though there is no guarantee it always happens. Other squads and solo players deploy into the same Hajin, and each of them decides whether to fight.

What changes when you play alone

In the June 2026 deep dive, Activision describes a Stealth Meter that helps solo players in particular: when an AI enemy is close to spotting you, you hear an audio cue and a HUD indicator turns from white to yellow to orange. Going prone or back into cover stops the alert.

Rival players are not counted in the Threat Level, so a quiet area can still hold an ambush. With no squadmates watching your back, the threat levels and enemies guide is worth a look first: a Low area is the easiest place to start.

Traits that help a solo player

Every Operator earns Trait Points as their Dog Tag levels up. These Traits from Activision's list are about getting back up, staying hidden and getting out, which matters most when nobody else is there:

  • Possum (Warfighter): Once per match, death puts you into Last Stand instead, and you can revive yourself to full health.
  • Die Hard (Survivalist): In Last Stand you never bleed out, and getting close to an exfil calls it for you.
  • Free Revive (Survivalist): Your first Wound is repaired automatically.
  • Impact Smokes (Survivalist): Going down releases a smoke screen.
  • Thermal Padding (Scout): Keeps you off UAVs, and Advanced UAVs only detect you the way a regular UAV would.
  • Viper Sense (Warfighter): Hides you from thermal optics and from AI targeting systems.

Where each one sits in its tree, and every other Trait, is in the MW4 DMZ skill tree guide.

Squads you will run into

Rival players are the biggest danger to a solo run. These are the places Activision says you are most likely to meet them:

  • Exfil sites: other squads may wait there, and an exfil flare is loud and can be seen from far away.
  • A Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case: after the kill it shows on every player's Tac-Map, and picking it up shows your position too.
  • Commanders: a fight with one can pull in rival Operators hunting the same target.
  • The Hunt Operators Dynamic Operation: accept it and you face a full squad of rival Operators.
  • Wanted players: everyone nearby gets a warning when one comes close.

The Hunt Operators job is one of the Dynamic Ops; on your own it means one of you against a whole squad. Lieutenants are covered in the DMZ bosses list.

Truce, join up or talk your way out

  • Activision says you can be as active or as passive with other players as you like, though other squads can still choose to attack you.
  • Proximity chat lets you hear rival Operators nearby, or mute them. Voices get louder as players get closer and carry direction and room echo, so you can try to talk your way out of a fight.

Joining up. Yes, up to four. Activision says the Ping Wheel lets you assimilate with another squad, and Call of Duty's community team says Assimilation is capped at 4 players in total. In play, the game says Joined New Squad, and a minute later the squad list shows four players. A squad from the lobby is three at most: Squad Fill adds two players to you, and the lobby has three slots.

How Bounties and Wanted work, and how to keep player fights rare, is in the DMZ PvE or PvP guide.

If you go down alone

Can you revive yourself in MW4 DMZ? Yes. Activision describes three ways: a Self-Revive Kit, which has its own slot; the Possum Trait, once per match; and the Tourniquet, which gets you back to a wounded state when you have no self-revive equipped. After a Tourniquet you need more medical items to reach full health, and a Medkit restores full health and lets you use the Tourniquet to get back on your feet from Last Stand.

You can print a Self-Revive Kit at the FOB: it is a Legendary recipe in the MW4 DMZ 3D Printer recipes (reach DMZ Level 48 to unlock).

If you do not get back up:

  • An Operator who is eliminated, or does not make it out, goes MIA (Missing in Action) and cannot deploy again until you deal with them.
  • Rescue: pay DMZ Cash from your Bank at the Operators station. The Operator comes back with every Trait they had.
  • An Operator Rescue Beacon you switched on before deploying makes that rescue free, and a Weapon Insurance Contract returns the weapons you had equipped to your Stash.

What a rescue costs and when to let an Operator go is in the MW4 DMZ MIA Operators guide.

Questions

Can you play MW4 DMZ solo?

Yes. Activision says you can infil solo or with a squad. Leave the Squad Fill switch off on the Ready Up screen and you deploy into Hajin on your own.

Is there a solo mode in MW4 DMZ?

Not as a separate playlist: you leave Squad Fill off and deploy alone. Call of Duty's community team says matches are then built to put solo players with other solos, though there is no guarantee, so you can still meet a full squad.

How do you turn off Squad Fill in DMZ?

On the Ready Up screen before you deploy, the Squad Fill switch sits at the bottom. Leave it off to go in alone; turned on, Activision says it drops you in with two other allied players.

Can you team up with other players during a DMZ match?

Yes, up to four. Activision says the Ping Wheel lets you assimilate with another squad, and Call of Duty's community team says Assimilation is capped at 4 players in total. In play, the game says Joined New Squad, and a minute later the squad list shows four players.

What happens if you die playing DMZ solo?

An Operator who is eliminated, or does not make it out, goes MIA (Missing in Action) and cannot deploy again until you deal with them. Switch on an Operator Rescue Beacon before you deploy and the rescue costs nothing; a Weapon Insurance Contract sends your equipped weapons back to the Stash.
