MW4 DMZ Operators

MW4 DMZ Skill Tree: Traits Explained

The DMZ skill tree is your Operator's Traits menu: 3 trees, 66 Traits and 18 Trait Points to spend. Here is how the trees work, what is random, and every Trait Activision has named so far.

Last updated Game version: Pre-launch (official intel, October 2026)

The short answer

Each Operator has three Trait trees, Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, with 22 Traits each (66 in all). The Operator earns one Trait Point per Dog Tag level, 18 at most, and a tree takes at most 9 picks, so you can fill two trees or spread your points over all three. Every pick is permanent.

How a Trait tree is laid out

All three trees share this layout. You start at the bottom and take one Trait per row.

  1. Row 9Major Traits, pick 1 of 2
  2. Row 8Minor Traits, pick 1 of 3
  3. Row 7Minor Traits, pick 1 of 3
  4. Row 6Major Traits, pick 1 of 2
  5. Row 5Minor Traits, pick 1 of 3
  6. Row 4Minor Traits, pick 1 of 3
  7. Row 3Major Traits, pick 1 of 2
  8. Row 2Minor Traits, pick 1 of 3
  9. Row 1Starting Minor Trait, random

Read from the Traits menu in Activision's pre-launch screenshot (checked October 11, 2026); the layout may change at launch.

  • Your first point in a tree buys its starting Minor Trait, which is random.
  • After that you take one Trait from each row, working up: rows of 3 Minor Traits and rows of 2 Major Traits.
  • The 6 Major Traits of a tree are always visible. The 16 Minor Traits, the starting one included, are random and stay hidden until you climb up to them.
  • Picking a Trait locks it in. You cannot swap it for another one later.

How Trait Points work

  • Every successful exfil gives DMZ XP to the Operator you played. Enough XP raises their Dog Tag level, and every new level gives one Trait Point; a strong deployment can give more than one.
  • Dog Tags go Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, with 3 levels each. Onyx III means all 18 points.
  • Each Active Duty Operator earns and spends their own points. Your overall DMZ level is a separate track.
  • The more Traits an Operator has, the more DMZ Cash it costs to rescue them if they go Missing in Action.
  • At 18 points you can Prestige the Operator: the Traits reset and they get a random permanent Prestige Trait. The DMZ Operator Prestige guide has the gear and cash each Prestige takes.

Every Trait named so far

Activision's FOB guide names these 21: the 6 Major Traits of each tree plus the random starting Minor Trait its Operator got, without saying which one is the Minor (checked October 11, 2026). The other 45 Traits go in once two sources confirm them in play.

Questions

How many Trait Points can a DMZ Operator get?

18. Every Dog Tag level gives one Trait Point, and an Operator is fully leveled at Onyx III with all 18 points.

How many Traits are there in MW4 DMZ?

66: 22 in each of the Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist trees. Each tree has 6 Major Traits you can always see and 16 random Minor Traits.

Can you reset your Traits in DMZ?

Not by choice: a Trait is locked in once you pick it. Prestiging the Operator removes all of their Traits so you earn and spend the points again, and adds a random permanent Prestige Trait.

Can you max out every Trait tree?

No. An Operator has 18 Trait Points and a tree takes at most 9, so you can fill two trees or spread your points over all three.
