MW4 DMZ XP Strategies: Fastest Ways to Level Up
The fastest DMZ XP is a Story Mission on repeat: every finish pays 12,500 XP, about 105,000 an hour. Leveling an Operator for Trait Points? Chain Dynamic Ops instead, about 95,000 an hour, since the Story Mission bonus only fills your DMZ level.

Which level are you trying to raise?
DMZ fills four separate bars, and the fastest route depends on which one you want. Pick the bar first, then the strategy.
| Bar | What it unlocks | Fastest way to fill it |
|---|---|---|
| DMZ level, 1 to 70 | FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes, Survival Kits, Operator skins | Replay a Story Mission |
| Operator Dog Tag, Steel I to Onyx III | One Trait Point per level, 18 in all | Chain Dynamic Ops with that Operator |
| Player Level, 1 to 55 | Your Call of Duty rank and Prestige, shared with Multiplayer and Warzone | Any DMZ match, with a Double XP Token running |
| Weapon level | Attachments and camos for the gun in your hands | Kills with that weapon, with a Double Weapon XP Token |
DMZ XP also counts toward your Player Level, but XP from Multiplayer or Warzone never raises the DMZ level. Weapons level in DMZ and Multiplayer alike. Your Operator's Dog Tag only fills from XP earned as that Operator, and it skips the 12,500 for a finished Story Mission: after one Critical Extraction run the DMZ level bar went up 20,860 XP and the Dog Tag bar only 8,293. Both bars show on the Level tab of the after-action report.
What each activity pays in DMZ XP
The Rating tab at the end of every match lists what you earned, line by line. These are the amounts it pays:
| What you do | DMZ XP |
|---|---|
| Every minute you spend in the match | 450 |
| Getting out at an exfil | 500, plus a fifth of your time XP |
| Finishing a Story Mission | 12,500 |
| Finishing a Dynamic Op | 3,000 to 8,000 |
| Each step of a Dynamic Op you do not finish | 250 |
| Killing a boss or a Lieutenant | 500 to 1,500 |
| Picking up an Operator's or a Lieutenant's Dog Tag | 1,000 |
| Opening a door with a key | 300 |
| Finishing a Side Op | about 150 |
| Reviving a player | up to 100 |
| Each AI soldier you kill, and each container or safe you open | 75 |
Time in the match is a big share of any run: just staying in and getting out is worth about 32,000 XP an hour. That does not make hiding worth it. Half an hour in a bush pays about 16,000 XP, while the same half hour spent on Dynamic Ops pays about 50,000. Stay longer only while you still have objectives to do.
1. Replay a Story Mission for your DMZ level
A finished Story Mission pays 12,500 XP every time, and you can replay any of them from Deploy at the FOB. No other single line on the Rating tab comes close. Over a whole run that is about 105,000 DMZ XP an hour:
| Story Mission | Squad | Time | XP | XP an hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Critical Extraction | squad | about 9 min | 21,206 | about 147,000 |
| Iron Citadel | squad of three | about 13 min | 27,738 | about 129,000 |
| Iron Citadel | solo | about 26 min | 46,603 | about 107,000 |
| Fallen Ember | squad | about 21 min | 29,875 | about 87,000 |
| Shopping Hacks | squad | about 21 min | 30,224 | about 86,000 |
For pure XP, Critical Extraction is the one to farm: get General Kang out of the hospital and onto the helicopter. Iron Citadel is longer and harder, but the Chang-san Air Base armory on the way hands you gear as well as XP. Bring a squad if you grind missions: solo, one down without a Self-Revive ends the run, while a teammate can pick you up.
2. Chain Dynamic Ops for your Operator
Pick Dynamic Operations at Deploy, or answer a Dynamic Op phone in Hajin, and take the next op as soon as one ends. All of that XP reaches your Operator, which makes this the fastest way to Trait Points, about 95,000 XP an hour, with DMZ Cash and a Supply Drop for every op on top. The more ops you fit into one match, the better the rate:
| Ops in one match | Time | XP | XP an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | about 27 min | 35,646 | about 79,000 |
| 3 | about 27 min | 41,260 | about 92,000 |
| 4 | about 27 min | 45,216 | about 100,000 |
| 7 | about 38 min | 71,310 | about 113,000 |
Ops do not all pay the same. One run of each paid this much, and Domino Protocol topped the list at 8,000 XP and 12,400 DMZ Cash:
| Dynamic Op | XP | DMZ Cash |
|---|---|---|
| Domino Protocol | 8,000 | 12,400 |
| Dead Man's Cache | 5,146 | 9,900 |
| Ghost Shipment | 5,032 | 7,500 |
| Special Delivery | 4,500 | 7,500 |
| Viral Reckoning | 4,230 | 7,500 |
| Chemical Denial | 3,000 | 5,000 |
| Ignition Point | 3,000 | 5,000 |
| Broken Resupply | 2,993 | 5,000 |
Ops spawn somewhere new every match, so speed between them is what counts: a helicopter crosses Hajin fastest, and an armored LTV keeps you alive on the road (see every DMZ vehicle). Chemical Denial is one of the quickest ops to finish. Each op's steps and where the phones turn up are in our Dynamic Ops guide.
3. Pick up XP on the way: keys, bosses and containers
- Every locked door you open with a key pays 300 XP, more than four containers. Our key list shows where each one goes.
- A Lieutenant or boss pays 500 to 1,500 XP, and their Dog Tag another 1,000 when you pick it up. Where each one is fought is on the DMZ bosses page.
- Each AI kill and each container pays only 75 XP. 150 kills is 11,250 XP, about what two Dynamic Ops pay, so kill farming at Chang-san Air Base comes to about 70,000 an hour, and almost half of that is still the time bonus.
- Looting for XP is the slowest choice, about 48,000 to 71,000 an hour. If XP is the goal, run objectives and only open weapon lockers and safes on the way.
Double XP Tokens, Season 1 boosts and weapon XP
- Double XP Tokens show as active on the Rating tab, but the DMZ level bar fills at the normal rate: the token doubles your Player Level instead. Tokens pause outside a match, so a DMZ run is a relaxed way to burn them for your rank.
- Bring in your Friends is a Season 1 XP boost that grows with the size of your squad, and the Season 1 Battle Pass has Double XP Tokens for your Player Level, weapons and the Battle Pass.
- Weapon XP from vehicles: the Season 1 update lowered the weapon XP you get for killing AI soldiers with a vehicle, so running them over is no longer a fast way to level a gun. Operator kills pay the same as before.
- Faster Learner is a Trait that gives your Operator a little more XP. It only pays off if you want to prestige fast; otherwise the point does more elsewhere in the trait tree.
Do you lose XP when you die?
No. You keep all the XP from the match, including a Story Mission you already finished; the only line you miss is the exfil bonus. The real cost is the Operator, who goes Missing in Action, and a rescue gets dearer as their Dog Tag climbs: the prices are in our MIA Operators guide. Playing for XP does not mean playing for fights. Move fast, skip the fights you do not need and leave other squads be.
How long DMZ level 70 and a maxed Operator take
Every DMZ level costs about the same XP, so the hours grow evenly. These are hours inside matches with Story Missions on repeat:
| DMZ level | Total XP | Match time |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 137,806 | about 1.3 hours |
| 30 | 459,845 | about 4.5 hours |
| 50 | 802,528 | about 7.5 hours |
| 70 | 1,165,573 | about 11 hours |
Operators climb more steeply. The first Dog Tag level takes 8,372 XP and each one after costs about 12% more: reaching Gold takes about 144,000 XP, and Steel I to Onyx III about 450,000, around 5 hours of back-to-back Dynamic Ops. With all 18 Trait Points the Operator can prestige for a permanent Trait; what that costs is in our Operator Prestige guide.
Questions
What is the fastest way to level up in MW4 DMZ?
Replay a Story Mission: each finish pays 12,500 XP, which works out at about 105,000 DMZ XP an hour. To level an Operator's Dog Tag instead, chain Dynamic Ops, about 95,000 an hour, because the Story Mission bonus never reaches the Operator.
Do Double XP Tokens work in DMZ?
A Double XP Token shows as active in DMZ, but it doubles your MW4 Player Level, not your DMZ level: the DMZ bar fills at the normal rate. Tokens pause outside a match, so DMZ is a fine place to spend them on your Player Level.
Do DMZ Orders give XP?
No. Orders pay DMZ Cash, recipes and kits. The XP comes from what you do while finishing them, such as a Story Mission or a Dynamic Op.
Does DMZ XP count toward my Multiplayer level?
Yes. DMZ XP also fills your 1 to 55 Player Level, the one Multiplayer and Warzone use. It does not work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP never raise your DMZ level.
Do you keep XP if you die in DMZ?
Yes. Everything you earned in the match stays, a finished Story Mission included. You only miss the exfil bonus, and your Operator goes Missing in Action until you rescue them.
How much XP is DMZ level 70?
1,165,573 XP in total. Each level costs about the same, so with Story Missions on repeat it takes about 11 hours of match time, plus menus and loading screens.
